Welcome to the Tom Abrams Screenwriting site.  Here you can find out what I'm up to or contact me if you like.   As a professional filmmaker and educator, I believe that telling stories via the moving image is the most compelling form of communication.   I look forward to sharing this experience with like-minded people.  Although I'm primarily based in Los Angeles, my work in film and television takes me to many places around the world.  Hopefully we will have a chance to work together someday. 

What I Do

SCREENWRITING: I've worked as a professional screenwriter since 1989, writing shorts, feature films and television for an international audience. Most of my work has been for the American market, but I've sold scripts and had films made in Europe too, including Germany, Denmark, the U.K. and Spain.  I love all kinds of movies and have written for almost every genre, including Animation.

DIRECTING: I started out acting and directing for theater then moved into filmmaking.  My work has been screened on HBO, SHOWTIME and FOX, and has been honored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, as well as the Berlin, Montreal and Cannes Film Festivals.

SCRIPT CONSULTANT: As a writer who is also a director and an educator, I bring multiple points of view to a project.  It's easy to find the flaws in a script, what's difficult is to find solutions that help the writer during the re-write and satisfy the director and producer's need for change.

SEMINARS & LECTURES: Since 1992, I've conducted more than 50 workshops and seminars on screenwriting and directing, in more than 15 countries around the world.

TEACHING: I had great teachers in film school including Milos Forman, Frank Daniel, Annette Insdorf, Ralph Rosenblum, Brad Dourif and Stefan Scharf.  I've tried to share what I learned from them since 1987,  teaching screenwriting, directing and film history.  I am currently a tenured professor at the USC School of Cinematic Arts in Los Angeles, in both the Production and Writing Departments.
